Tips for Rolling on to Roadside Stands
Roadside Stands provide a great opportunity for children to connect the food they eat with where it came from. Summer – when children of all ages are home and Roadside Stands abound – are perfect short stops to allow the family to take home the “freshest of the fresh.”
- A “Roadside Stand” is different from a “roadside market.” Not all roadside markets sell their own products and may be open year round. A Roadside Stand is seasonal, temporary and usually offers “daily” or “just picked” offerings. A stand may be a shack or even the back of a truck.
- Ask for a sample – for you and your children. The earlier they experience the taste of “just picked” the more likely they will carry the experience with them forever.
- Do not let your child wander into the fields as this may damage plants if there are mis-steps. Remember that growing food is not a hobby; every damage plant means a loss of income for the farmer.
- Do seek out “pick your own” stands. Take a ride with the family to outlying growing areas. Make it an adventure. Start with www.google.com – insert your destination and the words “Roadside Stands.” This will usually provide a variety of destinations.
- If you can see the field, you have found a Roadside Stand.
